This is Andrew Duffy, personal trainer and owner of thriveSF, and I personally welcome you to the thriveSF F.I.T.camp website.

I take the best aspects of bootcamps - the motivation, the community, the workout efficiency, and the affordability - and blend them together with the best elements of personal training (check out how in our video below).  The result?  ThriveSF F.I.T.camp.  A smarter, better workout environment, helping you grow you significantly healthier and injury free over the long term, by bringing you...

  • Real personal attention.  F.I.T.camp is small group personal training, not a large class, because we limit our class size to eight participants.  So if you come to us health concerns or questions, we can address them with you on a one-to-one basis.
  • Workouts customized to you. Your workout will not be the same as anyone else’s, keeping you focused on your workout while we push your limits with an expert eye.
  • Smarter, engaging exercises that help your posture and strengthen your muscles.  Our diverse and innovative exercises will keep your mind and body occupied without overwhelming you.
  • Injury-free workouts.  You work hard to stay healthy and fit for the long term, and we will help you accomplish that without having to overcome unneccessary and often costly injuries.

Rarely will a bootcamp be able to provide one of those four elements to its classes.  But no bootcamp will provide you all of them.

And you can get them all with F.I.T.camp for less than five dollars a day.

In health,

The Truth About Fitness Bootcamps
Andrew Duffy, NASM-CPT PES

Bootcamps are everywhere in San Francisco.   They are great at motivating and keeping participants accountable, and they also boost the metabolism through efficient workouts, taking an approach similar to the "hell week" that the United States military and secondary school sports teams utilize.  But bootcamps are doing damage to their clients.

In fact, at least 20% of bootcamp participants nationwide suffer injuries from their participation. Numerous research studies show that several factors can lead to various types of injuries common among bootcamp participants, including:

  • Lots and lots of repetitions of the same or similar movements
  • Performing exercises too advanced for a person's current fitness level
  • Imbalanced workout routine
  • Non-progressive programming
  • Insufficient rest between sets

Let's say you join a bootcamp, and you're one of the three or four people in the group who suffer an injury during bootcamp.  These injuries take away from the effort you put in, both mentally and physically, leaving you frustrated and unfit.  So, you would think bootcamp instructors would address these issues, but they don't.  Instead, they perpetuate them because they...
  • are limited to the amount of attention they can give you due to the size of the classes
  • use the same exercise for everyone, demanding the same from everyone
  • lack proper equipment or programming skills to give you a balanced and appropriate workout
What good is it to pay for something that by design can hurt you not help you?

ThriveSF F.I.T.camp changes all of that.  For the better.
